Andrew Poor
Andrew F. Poor (b.1965) has been composing and arranging for concert bands, chamber ensembles, and marching bands for many years with numerous compositions and arrangements to his name. Dr. Poor has three works published in the C.L. Barnhouse catalog. His most recent work, Hope Springs Eternal, is being published in 2013. Dr. Poor was honored to have his C.L. Barnhouse published work, To the Stars”, selected by bdguide.com as one of the “Top 100” new works for band in 2011. Additionally, Dr. Poor has served as composer-in-residence at Samford University, University of Alabama, and the University of Tennessee-Martin. He currently serves as the staff arranger for the University of Tennessee-Martin Skyhawk Marching Band. Frequently commissioned to compose new works for wind band by groups of all levels, his compositions have been performed by numerous All-State and Regional Honor Bands and have been performed at the Midwest Clinic, Music for All National Concert Band Festival, and the Georgia Music Educators Association State In-Service Conferences. Dr. Poor is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, Music Educators National Conference, National Band Association, Georgia Music Educators Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.
Dr. Poor is a member of the part-time faculty of the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University. He also concurrently serves as the Assistant Director of Bands at Fayette County High School in Fayetteville, Georgia. Dr. Poor received his Doctor of Music Education and Master of Music in Trumpet Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He previously received his Bachelor of Music Education (High Honors) from the University of Florida. Moreover, Dr. Poor is a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of Early Adolescence to Young Adulthood-Music/Band as recognized by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. Likewise, he has been recognized in six editions of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers as well as the 2002 and 2003 Who’s Who in America.
Dr. Poor is in demand as a clinician/consultant and has given presentations at numerous state and regional conferences, including the Midwest Clinic, Ohio Music Educators Association, Florida Music Educators Association, and five times for the Georgia Music Educators Association. Furthermore, he has written articles for the Journal for the International Trumpet Guild, Florida Music Director, and the Quarterly Journal of Music Teaching and Learning. He is on the summer faculty of the Spirit Music Camps where he works with in-service teachers on a variety of professional development topics and is a brass instructor for the Phantom Regiment drum and bugle corps. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at Fayette County High School, he is the band director at Inman and Cleveland Elementary in Fayetteville, Georgia.
